Twins and neighbours, they own traces of occupation that date back to prehistory. They offer an exceptional view over the Mâconnais vineyards. The Rocks of Solutré, Vergisson and Mont Pouilly have recently gained the much envied rank of " Great Natural site of National Interest .

Maconnais vineyards

Based on the gamay varietal, Mâcon reds vary according to soil composition and run the gamut from light an refreshing to full-bodied and strong flavoured

chardonnay gives rise to 85% of the aera's renowned whites and is responsible for their fruity, subtle and elegant taste.

Mâcon, Mâcon-Villages, Saint-Véran, Pouilly-Fuissé, Pouilly-Vinzelles, Pouilly-Loché and Viré-Clessé are the most famous appellation

Mâcon :

Ursulines museum : housed in an old 17th century convent, its collection focus on three main themes : local archaelogy, ethnography and fine art.

Every year,five important exhibitions are proposed to the public

Lamartine museum : housed in hotel Senece, a mansion built in the beginning of the XVIII century, the museum presents a collection of items recalling the life of lamartine (1790-1869). Collections also include paintings, tapestries and furniture belonging to the academy of macon.

Old Saint-Vincent : cathedral founded in VIth century. Today, only the narthex towers and the intervening subsist. Panoramic view of Mâcon and the Saône valley. This building is now a symbol of Mâcon.

Half-timbered house : the oldest and most famous house in macon (XV-XVI c). The façade is decorated with a multitude of grotesque carvings, statuettes often with a saucy inspiration !

Hospital (Hôtel Dieu) : built according to Soufflot's plan, the Hôtel Dieu is characterised by its remarkably large and high dome. Inside, the apothecary's shop with its XV c wood panels presents an important collection of chemist jars

Saint Laurent bridge : built during the XI century, it was for many years the link between the Kingdom of France and the Holly Roman Empire. It is classified as an historical monument.

La Charite : built by Soufflot, architect of the pantheon, this building was used to house poor people and orphans. You can still see the tower, a cask in wich abandoned babies were once put.

Saint Philibert abbey : former abbey church of Saint Philibert (XI-XIIthc) has a large porch and an impressive interior. In the apse is the reliquary of St Philibert and under a choir is a large Xth c crypt with well preserved capitals.

The burgundy museum : different scenes relates the burgundian rural life. You can see tools, clothes, furniture…

Greuze museum : the museum pays tribute to the town's famous native artist Jean-Baptiste Greuze, painter to the royal court. The other collections consist of sculptures and contemporary art.

Berzé-la-Ville : medieval village

Monk's chapel built in 1100, it is well known for its remarkably preserved collection of romanesque wall paintings of byzantine inspiration.



Berzé-le-Châtel : feudal castle, visit of the gardens, panoramic view over the valley from the terrace.



Pierreclos : castle dating from XIIth, XVth and XVIIIth centuries, authentic middle

age kitchen, XIIth c vaulted cellar, terraced gardens and a  XIIth c romanesque church on the castle grounds.
